Ancient magic. An island's deepest secrets. Legends awake.

Lilik is gutterborn and sick of it. She’s ready to be a hero. And finally, her chance has arrived. Lilik’s nation is under siege by brutal sea tribes, but there is hope on a distant volcanic island, a months-long night has fallen. Powerful magic gathers in the island’s dark. It may be enough to save them.

Despite taboos, Lilik bluffs her way onto an expedition bound for the island. But shortly after landfall, disaster strikes, sinking the ship. Marooned in the oppressive dark, Lilik’s shipmates succumb to primal fears, turning on each other. To survive, Lilik must evade the savages, unravel the island’s ancient secrets, and master her own, innate magic before it drives her mad.

Anything else will lead to her execution…and a cataclysm unseen since the last millennium.

For fans of the Hunger Games, An Ember in the Ashes, and Throne of Glass, Nightforged begins the epic Shattering of the Nocturnai series. Grab it now and finish the series with Shadowbound, Duskwoven and Darkborn.

Nightforged Shattering of the Nocturnai Book 1 eBook Carrie Summers

As an avid fantasy reader, I’m thrilled to have found this series and author. I’ve been reading fantasy my entire life, from epic to sword and sorcery to young adult fantasy, and I found this story utterly engaging. I rank the quality of the writing highly; it was immersive, and while reading I became invested enough that I can still feel those emotional moments.

The book felt fresh in a way that is hard to articulate. Its exploration of base human emotions reminded me of William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies” (evoking similar thrills), it had relatable young adult heroes (which I’m often fond of) and was rounded out with qualities I expect in a top-notch fantasy book (unique magic, epic stakes, dangerous journey and more). Carrie Summer’s writing style seems well established in the book, it's first person, consistent and well done. Each word carries weight without being overly dense and it reads well.

Avoiding spoilers, the setting of the book was fantasy with a strong level of realism (grit). It has deep characters, mostly in their late teens, who struggle with the conflicts in ways that I found realistic, refreshing and well thought out. It also gets intense; as my investment in the characters grew, the plot continued to surprise me up until the end. Lilik is a strong, clever and empathetic heroine whom I enjoyed following through the story.

I’d highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy, young adult / coming of age fiction or someone looking for something new with high-quality prose. I’m definitely looking forward to book two and hopefully more in the “Shattering of the Nocturnai” series!

Nightforged Shattering of the Nocturnai Book 1 eBook Carrie Summers Reviews

Carrie Summers knows how to build a world you can step right into, complete with sensory details that make it come alive. With a complex and fresh magic system, Summers deftly weaves a tale of the land's beginning with the desperate need of her main characters. She left me wanting to know more about the Vanished and the civilization they created. I highly recommend it.
The author had some interesting ideas, but in my view depended too much on "miraculous" occurrences to get her protagonist(s) out of danger. I felt she came up with things in process rather than having had a well thought-out story arc. Not a bad novel, nut no enough for me to read additional books in this series.
The cover art set a great expectation and the story made it come alive. Nightforged stands out in its class as a result of Carrie Summers' wonderful imagination and ability to create a character that we all can relate with as the main characters strives to follow her dream facing odds that most of us have never imagined. Located in a wonderful world with diverse cultures and beliefs help the reader immerse themselves into a storyline that is new and fresh.
I read. A lot. I am so excited that I discovered author Carrie Summers. With an amazing connection between pen and the theater of the mind, Miss Summers introduces us to Lillik, a stubborn, willful but loyal friend with powers she never knew could exist. I recommend buying all four books at once (and I believe there is a prequel) because you will not want to put them down. If you want to know more, I think there is a way to message me here.

Try one book. You will be hooked!
Gritty realism, unique magic system, creative world, strong inventive and exciting plot, great lead and supporting characters, really strong writing... pretty much all I can ask for in a fantasy novel. I'm off (running) to get book 2. You will too. Highly recommended. This is a wonderful new fantasy series.
I wasn't sure about this just from the preview but something about the protagonist and the world stuck in my head so I bought the whole book. There were a few moments I found myself shaking my head at the inevitable "oh no I have so many feelings for both these people and I don't know what to do!" type stuff, but for my taste it remained within reasonable bounds, and never crossed over into full-blown love triangle soap-opera. The characters are sometimes immature and foolhardy, entirely in keeping with the reality of teenagers set loose into dangerous and high-stress situations. I took off a star because I felt that the characters would benefit from more fleshing out, which may happen more in the following books.

The world and magic are what drew me in the most, as this is a concept I have never read before. Without spoiling anything, the way the magical elements of this story actually work turn out to be different than what is initially presented. It makes for an interesting twist that adds potential for future installments rather than narrowing things down. I look forward to reading the rest of them!
I loved this book! The characters are well defined, and the descriptions of both people and places quickly draw you into the fantasy environment. The story is woven with intrigue, excitement, suspense and romance which makes it very difficult to put the book down. I highly recommend the book and can't wait to find out what happens in subsequent books!
